Thomas Kampen is a sociologist and assistant professor at the University for Humanistic Studies in Utrecht. He obtained his PhD degree at the University of Amsterdam in December 2014 with a dissertation on workfare volunteerism in the Netherlands. His research focuses on the lived experiences of citizens and social workers after welfare state reforms, in particular reforms regarding long-term care and unemployment. In his work on the impact of welfare state reforms on citizens he combines the sociology of emotions with theories on social justice. His publications on the impact of welfare state reforms on social workers combine the sociology of work with insights from theories on street level bureaucracy.
